The X-Files was a science-fiction drama show that ran from 1993 to 2002. It was created and produced by Chris Carter. It starred David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson who played FBI agents who had the task of investigating the X-Files... cases with a more paranormal or extraterrestrial link. It started on the FOX network, and was one of its first break out hits and made pretty much anything to do with the program a pop cultural icon. Duchovny and Anderson became sensations with enormous fan bases around each and the slogan is to this day repeated across the globe, "The Truth is Out There". The show is responsible for a flood of both real and imaginary conspiracy theories. Already existing paranoia towards government and government officials exploded into groups that even today repeat old x-files episodes as references to true facts. But more than anything, it added to the already growing belief in the alien invasion and abduction phenomena. Where as before they were always within certain smaller groups of individuals... suddenly people embraced the thoughts and theories like never before... and it became as much a social fad to believe, as a curious one.

In the series, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully (Duchovny and Anderson respectively) tackled multiple cases dealing with aliens, folklore and secret cover-ups. Mulder was the die hard believer of the two, while Scully was the skeptic, which allowed for a lot of banter and interesting interaction between the two agents.

As the show progressed both became embroiled in the same larger conflicts (termed "the mythology" or "mytharc" by the show's creators) and developed a close and ambiguous friendship — which many fans saw as more than platonic. The X-Files was declared by TV Guide to be the 37th Best TV show of all-time, and the second greatest cult TV show of all time, trailing only Star Trek. At the time of its final episode, it was the longest running sci-fi show in American television history, a title since lost to Stargate SG-1.
